Baikonur in Kazakistan was the city from which all of the Russian space voyages started. After the demise of the erstwhile soviet Union, Russia started renting Baikonur from Kazakistan. The town is both Kazak and Russian, and the mayor is chosen jointly by the two nations. The fenced, highly guarded city is one of teh safest cities in East Europe with zero crime rate.
