Silicon lasers promise faster opto-electronic devices

Researches at UC Santa Barbara have succeeded in making the first mode-locked silicon evanescence laser. What this technical Latin means is that they have succeeded in making a laser out of silicon. Now that silicon is used for most electronic devices, this discovery paves the path for opto-electronic devices that can combine movement of electrons with movement of photons, thereby allowing data to be transferred faster.
